The song is a tribute to Warren's neighbour and friend Miss Susie Ross who died in 2021 aged 99 years old. They became friends when she offered her empty garage to park his 1967 Vauxhall Victor. He started to drive her to visit her best friend in a care home and do her shopping each day. The song is being released on what would have been her 100th birthday on 7th March 2022. A demo of the song was played at her funeral.

When Susie was just a little girl, she was raised in a city hotel.
Her mum and daddy would serve the guests each time they ran the bell.
A tiny kid but she sure had the brains and dreamed of being a teacher one day
She got her degree at the university, and it was no surprise that they said.

Spitfire Susie, she knows how to do it
Spitfire Susie, everybody knew it.

And then when the war came along, and she was called away
To crawl inside the cockpits of the planes to fix the damage of the day.
It was lonely all on her own, but she read literature at night
Now and then she would talk to the pilots that she helped lift to the sky

When the peace came, then came the chance to teach at a primary school
In a little mining village away from the death, she passed the young children her tools
Known as Miss Ross by thousands all over but Suzie to only a few.
So many people where privileged to learn from her as the century flew

When Susie was close to a hundred years old, that’s when we became friends
Kind of funny to many I guess that she became a teacher again
To a singer who was blind to the good that he could do by looking outside
Of a world that was based on glitter and glory, and the falsehood of pride.

He would help her, and that would help him, a couple of kooks on the run
He’d take her the morning papers each day to read in the afternoon sun.
Lesson need not be directly taught and helping another get by
Teaches you something about yourself that heals all those tears never cried.
